This is the sequel of the Gintama Massacre, written just after HeroNation.
Just this morning. I put a part of the time i had for playing god of war 3 to watching the “first” airing of one of the best anime series of the decade, which is no other than Gintama. As the title suggest, the glooming demise of the series, that was exclusively previewed on Heronation, never failed our expectations. expectations that, in the end of the day. QUALITY still reigned supreme over the airwaves, and bastardize as our friend HG, toward the recent line up of anime, that started since naruto. Regardless of the verdict done by some organization, whose putting wrongfully information in the internet.Before we dig in. Here is the recorded video of the entire episode 1 (Episode 5) of gintama.
If you are finished, or have decided that, there are thing in life worth seeing for. Lets dive right in with the analysis.
Presentation
I’ll skip over the story, since I am not reviewing Gintama. Instead, I’ll talk about some of the point, ABS made towards the localization. For now lets dive in with the presentation.
For starters. They started airing episode 5. Which is quite a shocking thing. Given that it has skip, a lot of back story. Not to mention some of the starting parodies of this series. It seems, ABS is not keen on saying things, such as bankai, and bleach references, which by the way owned by the rival channel GMA. This alone, can open up a huge problem. Since most of the parodies made in the series, are coming from the past and current line up of animes in TV tokyo. That said, some anime series are partly distributed by various tv stations. It would be interesting to see, if they are going to cut the questionable parts, or simply change the translation, which can ultimately destroy the entire point of having this anime aired here.
Translation
Because of the heavy Japanese, and Anime references used in this series. ABS has just wish their deaths, by choosing this awesome series, without regard of its contents potential nightmare. Even so, the effort they put up is currently laughable to downright insulting. for one, they put “Jack of all trade Gin” instead of the original “Odd Jobs Gin”. They didn’t put any effort of translating some of the signs, and captions used. Which is already been a major problem, in all local anime since the dawn of time. At least if they really want anime to be worthy, at least put that kind of effort.
Dubbing
Another part of what makes this anime great, is the overall voice talent, aka; seiyuus. Of course, not everyone can understand, or even have a decent English vocabulary, so said the broadcast media. The people of ABS, did a terrible work in localizing the characters, and not even took, so far, the effort in giving that pinoy feel to it. So far, that only ones that did were, yakitate, and Slam Dunk.
There are major point that made the characters stale, and uninteresting. Listening to Gintoki’s is not as sarcastic, and pretty much flat and dead, unlike its original. They used that generic hero tone. Perhaps because, they he’s the hero and they should use that generic formula. Shinpachi has a serious, and appealing feel to it. Not, something that is designed to be annoying and downright emo. He’s the colonel exposition, and he shouts in a overly exaggerated, “it’s so ovious, i just have to say it to be funny” tone. Kagura, is not sadistic, and sarcastic like gintoki. Her voice is pretty mature for her age, shes 14, her tone should be higher.
Then there is the Shinsengumi. Where okita sounded uninteresting, and generic, his attempts of killing hijikata is not as funny with that kind of voice. Not to mention, his sadistic aura is not fit for the voice. Toshi is a mixed one. There are time he sounded right, and sometimes he sounded wrong. Kondo sounded fine. But because his appearance is short. My opinion may change overtime. I could go on with the faults, that i just can’t find anything that is right about it. But, there was one short scene which kondo appears briefly, where the dubbing played correctly.
Holy week is near
So far as episode 1 (technically 5) shows its horrible direction in the coming months. I’m still in my first of my 4 part review. If i am going to recommend this local dubbed anime. Please watch it during the holy week. This will serve as your self punishment for all the sins you have atoned in the past year.

I wouldn't bother talking about this if it weren't the best anime of the decade. Let along beat it to death for 3 more times. There is just so much wrong in it. More likely, another set of disappointment for us tomorrow.
To be frank, it's 'bitin'… tumatawa na ako pero parang may kulang… Nabitin ako sa tawa (I'm just laughing then suddnely, I stopped).
I bleieve that it should be improved on the next episodes, or else, people will be dissapointed.
How I wish there will be another show like Slam Dunk. (the dubbing part)
Not only the dubbing suited the character. They added the “pinoy feel” to it.
